## ENCE Reaching the Finals in Katowice

The Finnish ENCE squad wasn’t really favored coming into IEM Katowice 2019… and that’s an understatement. They were coming in from the Minor circuit with their only bigger achievement being a win at the DreamHack Open Winter 2018, where they didn’t really face off against higher-tier competition, with the pre-NiKo French G2 squad and the Danish Heroic and OpTiC rosters being the only real competition.

ENCE got off to a decent start in Katowice, reaching the New Legends stage with a 3-1 record. However, they faced trouble there, losing their first two games against Renegades and HellRaisers, and were looking like they were on the outs before winning three games in a row against BIG, G2, and AVANGAR to head into the next stage.

In the Champions Stage, ENCE faced off against the heavily favored powerhouse of Team Liquid… and they beat them 2-0. Next came Na’Vi, and you’d think Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev would handle these guys with ease…

It didn’t happen. ENCE eked out a 2-1 win. They were eventually defeated by the dominant Astralis in the last game, but that doesn’t take away from the surprise that brought us one of the greatest meme-songs in Counter-Strike history: EZ4ENCE, ENCE, ENCE! ## Gambit-Immortals Final at PGL Kraków

If you were to bet on the [PGL Kraków 2017 Major](https://liquipedia.net/counterstrike/PGL/2017/Krakow) final, you’d probably end up betting on a rematch between Astralis and the hometown Virtus.Pro, or the likes of the newly-NiKo’d up FaZe and ever-dangerous Brazilian SK Gaming roster.

It didn’t quite turn out like that. The group stage saw the first upsets, with FaZe crashing out with an 0-3 record, losing against BIG, mousesports (who took revenge on Nikola “NiKo” Kovac for leaving them), and the ever-pesky Flipsid3 Tactics. Also leaving the contest were Na’Vi, who lost to G2, Immortals, and Fnatic. Cloud9 also got eliminated.

The 3-0 teams were the biggest shocks of all, as that title went to BIG and Gambit, two teams that were expected to sneak into the Champions, if that. SK Gaming, Astralis, North, Fnatic, and Virtus.Pro joined them, while the final spot went to the virtually unknown Immortals. Notably, BIG discovered a little crouch-jumping trick that allowed them to breeze through the Group Stage, raising some controversy.

BIG’s Cinderella run was quickly ended by a bigger Cinderella in Immortals, who managed to beat them 2-1 in a narrow game. Some may call it karma. In the other games, Gambit took out Na’Vi 2-0 with Fnatic, Astralis beat SK, and VP eliminated North for the second Major in a row. Everyone was expecting a rematch of the Atlanta Major; however, Gambit and Immortals had different plans, beating the favorites.

In the final showdown, Gambit narrowly beat out the young Brazilians with a 2-1 win from one map behind, ending one of the most unexpected and upset-heavy Majors.

## Vega Squadron, QBF, and Cloud9 at ELEAGUE Major Boston 2018

The next Major wasn’t as chaotic, but it nevertheless featured some massive upsets along the way. With the Major being extended with an additional Swiss round, some additional upsets appeared. The first was Vega Squadron, the worst team in Kraków, kicking out Team Liquid with their win in the Challengers Stage.

Another CIS team sneaking through the Challengers Stage was Quantum Bellator Fire, a totally unknown commodity that… just kept going. QBF managed to beat Virtus.Pro, reigning champions Gambit, and mousesports on their way to the quarter-finals. Another big shocker from this stage was the elimination of Astralis, who went out losing to Cloud9 with a 1-3 record.

And Cloud9 was the team that delivered the big upset this time. After losing their first two games, they stormed back, winning three in a row to advance to the quarterfinals, where they faced off against the 3-0 G2 Esports. The record didn’t scare them, though, as the hometown team took the game 2-0, also winning a 2-1 series against the heavily favored SK Gaming. The final was supposed to be redemption for FaZe, however, as they recovered from their horrible performance in Kraków to reach the Major final, where they were considered the out-and-out favorites.

FaZe started off winning Cloud9’s map pick of Mirage in a narrow game. It seemed that Overpass would be a quick win for FaZe, and they’d be able to celebrate their first Major win. Instead, Cloud9 came storming back, winning the map. Inferno looked like another map controlled by FaZe, as they took a 15-11 lead. Just one round. How hard could it be?

Very hard, apparently, as Cloud9 once again came storming back, and after two periods of intense overtime, managed to take the first-ever major for a North American roster—fittingly enough, in Boston, completing one of the most unlikely runs in CS history.

## Outsiders Winning IEM Rio 2022

Outsiders may not sound familiar, but they’re actually an off-brand of Virtus.Pro created as a result of the sanctions placed on Russian rosters by various tournament organizers after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Coming into Rio, the Outsiders didn’t really have any successes to speak of. They got kicked out from Antwerp with a 1-3 record and hadn’t really looked the part. As they progressed from the Challengers stage, they looked decent, and they managed to get to the Quarters with a 3-1 record in both preceding stages.

The tournament really opened up with the Legends stage seeing favorites like FaZe, Vitality, and Liquid being eliminated, and Astralis and G2 completely missing the tournament, the bracket suddenly opened up for competition. The Outsiders still seemed like an outside shot with the likes of Heroic, Mouz, Na’Vi, and hometown FURIA in the bracket, but in the end, Outsiders made it to the final, beating Fnatic, MOUZ, and Heroic on their way to their first Major title.

## BLAST Paris Major 2023

We put the whole Major up, since the whole thing was a massive upset—maybe except for the end result. The Challengers stage saw the elimination of MOUZ, while Na’Vi and G2 fell in the Legends stage. This meant that the likes of GamerLegion, Monte, Apeks, and Into the Breach joined Heroic, FaZe, Liquid, and Vitality in the quarterfinals, with a bracket that saw some big underdog wins, including Apeks beating out Liquid and GamerLegion beating Heroic in the semis to get into the final.

There was no stopping the hometown heroes from Vitality, however, as they took the series in two. The underdog teams were soon ripped apart for players by the big orgs, but the last Counter-Strike Major will be one we’ll remember as one of the most surprising ones… even if the odds-on favorites did win in the end.

From French favorites, we go to French underdogs. As the fifth map of a grueling series was winding down to a close, Mouz held a 14-7 lead on Mirage. However, Liquid managed to get a round back and, having gotten into a 5v2, they looked good for another round and potentially breaking the Mouz economy as they looked to make a comeback.

Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth is the king of clutches, and we had to pick one of them for this list. In this case, it’s his 1v2 against Virtus.Pro in the final of ELEAGUE Atlanta. In a tight game on Overpass, Astralis was facing off against the Polish plow in the final of that year’s first Major. With a map-defining round in the balance, Xyp9x was brought down to 1 hp before managing to kill 2 VP players and break their economy. This round turned out to be crucial, as Astralis took the map 16-14, avoiding defeat, and later took Train to win their first-ever Counter-Strike Major.

## ropz vs. G2

The ultimate Inferno A-Site anchor, Robin “ropz” Kool, faced off against G2 in the first map of the IEM Katowice 2022 Grand Final. With the score at 15-14 for G2, FaZe were up against a wall, and G2 went all in on the A bombsite, where ropz was isolated against 4 players as Finn “karrigan” Andersen was only starting to rotate. Despite this, ropz took 3 players with insanely accurate shots with his M4 before switching to his Deagle to finish off Nikola “NiKo” Kovac. This sent the game to overtime, where FaZe took 4 straight rounds to win the map, before sweeping G2 in the series and winning the IEM Katowice 2022 crown.

We have to go way back to 2015 for this one, as Liquid was playing against Sponsorless (later Conquest) in the CEVO Professional Season 8. Down 15:10 on Cache, Spencer “Hiko” Martin got stuck in a 1v5 post-plant on A-Site against some solid competition, including Keith “NAF-FLY” Markovic, with a full buy no less. You can even see the shock of the opposing team in the chat after the round ends. It’s a beautiful clutch… that didn’t lead to much as Sponsorless managed to take the series.

## NEO 1v5

Filip “NEO” Kubski is one of the greatest Counter-Strike players of all time, and when he was left alone against 5 Dignitas players in a round that could decide a Zowie DreamHack Open 2016 final spot for VP or an overtime thriller, the pressure was on. As the DIG force-buy decimated the plow, Neo took things into his own hands, managing to plant the bomb and defend it from four Danish players, securing the win that then allowed VP to beat Cloud9 and win the entire tournament.

## ZywOo 1v5

A crucial pistol round in a Decider game of the IEM Beijing Final. 1v5 with a P250 in hand and a dream in mind. In a tight spot and limited view of the bomb, Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut took on Na’Vi and doled out 5 clean kills to secure the round. The pistol win actually helped Vitality secure the win as well, as they managed to convert their anti-ecos and win the half handily. Who knows what would’ve happened if not for this clutch?

## GuardiaN 1v5

We keep going with the 1v5s, as Ladislav “GuardiaN” Kovacs got stuck in a 1v5 against Fnatic in the Grand Finals of IEM Katowice 2018 after FaZe’s B-Rush fell apart. With Fnatic looking to kill FaZe’s economy, they went after the AWPer hard. GuardiaN didn’t falter under pressure though, as he managed to take the fight to the Swedes, killing four before outplaying Freddie “KrimZ” Johansson on his way to a round win. Unfortunately for FaZe, this clutch wasn’t enough to win the map, and Fnatic won the final 3-2 in the end.

## CadiaN Can Win Pro League Like This

When Kasper “CadiaN” Møller is on, he’s one of the most fun players to watch in all of Counter-Strike. And in the ESL Pro League Season 13 final… he was on fire. As Heroic held a 15-6 lead on their Mirage T-Side, CadiaN was left in a 1v4 eco against a Gambit full-buy. He saw an opening though, as he crept through Connector to knife Dmitriy “SH1RO” Sokolov, stole his AWP, and with 2 hp and a dream, killed the other three Gambit players, securing Pro League despite Alex “MACHINE” Richardson’s claim that “he cannot win Pro League like this.” Well, he just did.

The Best Counter-Strike Clutches of All-Time

The CS2 Workshop isn’t just a goldmine of awesome content; it’s an opportunity for aspiring visual artists to create a gun skin that could end up being added in-game, earning money from Valve for its use in Counter-Strike. Over the years, several [excellent skin creators](https://pirateswap.com/blog/article/best-cs2-skin-creators) like Coridium, Puffin, and G99-Factory have emerged from the Steam Workshop and created multiple iconic designs now featured in the game.

Joining them is not an easy task, as the Workshop is full of amazing skins that haven’t been picked up by Valve yet. But if graphic design is unironically your passion and you have the time to create some skins, here’s a guide on how to get your skins into CS2.

## Step 1: Create the Skin

While we can’t tell you how to create the perfect skin, we can give you the rundown of the technical requirements for a skin to be submitted into the Workshop. Here’s what you’ll need:

### Get Some Image Editing Software

You probably already know this, but in case you don’t—you won’t go far if you’re unable to edit the image. That’s why you’ll need an image editor. GIMP is perhaps the best free version, but the Adobe Creative Cloud suite is probably your best bet for the highest quality skins, with creators using Photoshop, Illustrator, and Substance Painter 3D to get the best results.

### Install CS2 Workshop Tools

The next step is to download the CS2 Workshop Tools. You can do this through the Game Options menu by right-clicking the game on Steam and going to Add-Ons. The Editor will allow you to export skins, create your own design, and apply it to any gun.

### Pick Your Finish

Finishes are an important part of every CS gun, with different finishes providing different features to your skin. The most popular styles among creators are the Custom Paint Job and Gunsmith finishes, as they give the most creative liberties to the designer. However, if you want to go for something more minimal, the other finishes are absolutely an option, as they allow you to play around with various patterns and visual tricks and effects.

The finishes available are:

* **Solid Color** – A one-color design. For example, the Glock 18 | Candy Apple.
* **Spray-Paint** – A finish styled for a stenciled and sprayed-on look. For example, the MAG-7 | Firestarter.
* **Hydrographic** – Based on a real process where parts of the gun are dipped in a tank containing film with the patterns, applying them to it. For example, the AWP | BOOM.
* **Anodized** – A shiny, single-color skin with a “candy coat,” like the MP9 | Hot Rod.
* **Anodized Multicolor** – The same as above, but with more than one color in the design, bringing awesome images to life, for example, the MP9 | Rose Iron.
* **Anodized Airbrush** – The same as Anodized skins, but the multicolored coat is styled to look like an airbrush. For example, the Desert Eagle | Blaze.
* **Patina** – Simulating a chemical reaction, it creates an additional shell over the metallic parts of a gun. For example, the Glock-18 | Bunsen Burner.
* **Custom Paint Job** – Simply allows you to create whatever you want on the skin. The simplest and most popular style for community creations, for example, the AWP | Hyper Beast.
* **Gunsmith** – Combines the shine of the Patina with the customization of the Custom Paint Job, allowing you to simulate depth with your skin, creating intricate 3D-like designs, for example, the AK-47 | Legion of Anubis.

### Start Working

Now you know the basics. Follow the guide on the Counter-Strike website or check out the detailed book at overpay.guide. Once you’re ready, create, create, create! A good idea is to create different color variants of each skin you design. That way, you avoid losing a great design if Valve is looking for a different palette. Also, remember that you can only use your own designs. Do not steal other people’s work, lest you end up like the infamous creator of the M4A4 Howl. Once you’re happy with your creation, show it to some people. They’ll give you invaluable feedback that will help you perfect the skin before you show it to the world. Once everyone tells you it’s nice, then the hard work really begins.

### What Should You Consider When Creating Your Skins?

Valve likes a variety of styles and hasn’t really avoided any of late. However, it’s important to consider that your weapon should either stand out very much or look kind of low-key while still standing out. If you look at Valve’s selection process, it’s clear that they select the absolutely stunning skins for Covert skins, while Mil-Specs, for example, are usually far less vibrant and detailed while still being very much vibey and fun. Collection-fillers are often straight-up generic. Creating those is still a talent.

What we’ve noticed is that creating collections for various weapons might be beneficial, as Valve is big on adding similar weapons together, as was the case with the Asiimov, Cyrex, and Hyper Beast. If you have a cool design, test it out on a bunch of weapons to get the best chance.

This means that your collections should be themed, varied in complexity and “fun factor,” while keeping an original concept. We know! Easier said than done; that’s why we write blogs and don’t design Counter-Strike skins.

## Step 2: Submit Your Skin

We joke, of course, but the truth is the submission isn’t just as simple as rendering out your skin and sending it to the Workshop. You have to promote it, making it look appealing, using your friends to tell people about it, and posting it on various subreddits. There’s a lot of work to do here. The goal isn’t to get the most upvotes but to make sure the skin is noticed by the Valve mods… and then it’s just… waiting. For example, the P250 | Apep’s Curse from Apel8 had to wait three years to be included in-game.

Right now, creating memorable skins for the SG 553 might be your best bet, as the gun has the fewest Workshop submissions at 404 and not too many skins in CS2 itself with 34. That’s a good marker of some growth potential for future cases.

## Step 3: Profit?

Workshop submissions are a lot of work, but the rewards can be immense. With Valve giving you a percentage of the earnings from the skin, you can expect anywhere from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars per year for your work. 

Valve has also organized contests in the past, with pretty impressive cash rewards for the winners. The 2022 Dreams & Nightmares contest, for instance, which gave us the case of the same name, had a prize pool of [$1.7 million](https://www.counter-strike.net/winners)! 17 skins were selected, meaning that each winner received a $100,000 prize. Nothing to sniff at, eh?

Of course, there’s a risk, but if you work on them as a hobby, it can be an unexpected bonus and absolutely life-changing money. We wouldn’t bet our house on this, but if you like creating weapons anyway… why not try in CS2?

How to Get Your Skins into CS2

Dust 2 is one of the most iconic maps in Counter-Strike history, and it remains a staple in the CS2 map pool. Known for its simplicity and balanced design, Dust 2 offers both new and experienced players a variety of tactical options. This guide will walk you through the basics of the map, including the layout, key strategies, and tips to help you dominate on Dust 2. So, let’s get started—here’s your ultimate Dust 2 guide!

## Layout

[Dust 2](https://counterstrike.fandom.com/wiki/Dust_II) features a straightforward three-lane setup, with A-Site, B-Site, and Mid forming the core areas of the map. A-Site has three main entrances: Long, Short (Catwalk), and CT-Spawn, while B-Site can be accessed from Tunnels or Mid. The map's simplicity is deceptive, as it requires precise teamwork and strategy to control the key choke points effectively.

## General Tips

**Utility Mastery:** Dust 2 might seem like a simple map, but mastering utility is essential. Knowing how to smoke off critical areas like Mid Doors, Long Corner, and B-Tunnels can make the difference between winning and losing rounds. Practice your flashbangs and smokes, especially for Mid and A-Long, to gain an advantage over your opponents.

**Map Control:** Dust 2 is all about controlling key areas of the map. As CTs, holding onto Mid and Long is crucial, while Ts should focus on taking control of Short and B-Tunnels. Early aggression can be rewarding but risky, so coordinate with your team to avoid getting picked off.

**Team Coordination:** Dust 2 might allow for solo plays more than other maps, but working with your team is still the best way to secure rounds. Whether it's setting up a crossfire on A or coordinating a split push on B, teamwork is the foundation of success on this map.

## A-Site

### CT Side

Defending A-Site on Dust 2 is all about positioning and timing. As a CT, you'll likely be holding Long or Short (Catwalk). Long can be a bloodbath at the start of the round, so be ready with smokes and flashes to delay the T push. If you're playing from Short, consider peeking early with an AWP or playing passively from the site.

Key positions to hold on A include Goose, Ramp, and the A-Platform. Goose is great for catching Ts off-guard, especially if they rush through Short. Ramp offers a versatile position where you can engage enemies from both Long and Short. If you're [playing with an AWP](https://pirateswap.com/blog/article/cs2-awp-guide), holding A-Platform allows you to pick off enemies crossing from Long or peeking from Short.

When defending Long, there are two main concepts, you can either play extremely aggressively, covering off the mid-doors from the long corner, or playing passively from Car or the site itself.

For Short, aggression is an option, especially with the new boxes allowing CTs a quicker route. But with how the map is set up, if you don’t have a great read on the Ts, you might run into what is essentially a firing squad.

### T Side

Attacking A-Site as a T requires good utility usage and timing. The most common strategy is the Long A control. Start by smoking the Long Corner and flashing over to blind any CTs holding the angle. Once you have control of Long, your team can execute onto A, smoking off CT-Spawn and focusing on Short and the site itself.

If you're going for a Short take, a fast push with well-timed flashes can overwhelm the CTs. Be sure to molly Goose to flush out any defenders, and consider smoking off CT-Spawn to prevent AWPers from picking you off.

A split push, with some players going Long and others through Short, is one of the most effective ways to take A-Site. This approach divides the attention of the CTs, making it harder for them to defend against the onslaught.

## B-Site

### CT Side

B-Site is often considered one of the harder sites to retake, so your goal as a CT is to hold it at all costs. The key to defending B is controlling B-Tunnels. You can do this with early aggression, flashing and pushing into Tunnels, or by playing more passively and holding from the site.

Critical positions on B-Site include the Back Plat, Car, and Window. Back Plat allows you to hold the site from a distance, while Car provides a close-range option. The Window position is excellent for covering both the B-Tunnels entrance and the site itself.

Most of your trust, however, will have to be put into the Mid defence. If they lose their position, you’re likely pretty screwed.

If you lose control of B-Tunnels, consider rotating an additional player from Mid to bolster your defenses. Just remember, a B retake is difficult, so if the Ts get the bomb down, you'll need to coordinate with your teammates for a successful retake.

### T Side

Taking B-Site as a T is all about speed and precision. The most common approach is a fast B-Rush, where you overwhelm the defenders with sheer numbers. Start by flashing over B-Tunnels to blind any defenders, then push in as a group, using your utility to clear out the common positions like Car and Back Plat.

If a rush isn’t your style, you can opt for a slower approach, taking control of Mid first and then splitting onto B. Smoke off CT-Spawn and Mid to B, then send some players through Tunnels while others push from Mid. This split forces the CTs to divide their attention, making it easier to take the site.

A more advanced tactic is the fake B-push. Show presence in B-Tunnels, throw some smokes and flashes, then quickly rotate to A through Mid or Short. This strategy can catch the CTs off-guard, especially if they're prone to over-rotating.

## Mid

### CT Side

Controlling Mid is crucial for the CTs, as it allows you to quickly rotate between A and B. The key positions to hold are Mid Doors and the Window. With an AWP, you can dominate Mid Doors, preventing the Ts from gaining control of this vital area. If you're playing with a rifle, consider holding from the Window or playing a more passive role near CT-Spawn.

A common strategy is to start the round by smoking Mid Doors to deny the Ts early vision. This forces them to either push through the smoke or take a slower approach. Additionally, throwing a Molotov into Lower Tunnels can delay the Ts and disrupt their timing.

### T Side

For the Ts, Mid control is essential for splitting onto both A and B. The most effective way to take Mid is with a well-timed smoke on Mid Doors and a flash to blind any CTs holding the angle. Once you've smoked off Mid, you can either push through to B via the Mid to B area or take control of Short and set up for an A-Site push.

One of the most powerful plays as a T is to lurk in Lower Tunnels. From here, you can gather information on the CT's positions and relay it to your team. You can also pop up into Mid to catch any rotating CTs off-guard, giving your team the upper hand in both A and B takes.

## Conclusion

## Puffin

The creator of the **Neon Rider** is perhaps the greatest success story in Counter-Strike when it comes to crossover appeal.

10 Best CS2 Skin Creators

There’s been a lot of talk about Snap Tap in CS2 lately—if you find these discussions confusing, this post is for you! We’ll go over what Snap Tap is, how it was used, and why it’s no longer accepted in either casual or professional CS2. Let’s dive in! 

## What is Snap Tap? 

The gaming hardware manufacturer [Razer](https://www.razer.com/) introduced Snap Tap in 2024, marketing it as a “tournament organizer approved” addition to its Huntsman series of keyboards. It’s essentially a script allowing you to make perfect counter-strafing moves every time. Its impact has been felt almost immediately, with many teams switching to Razer’s keyboards in order to use their improved performance in-game.

Counter-strafing, by the way, is a movement technique in CS2 enabling you to quickly stop moving in order to improve your aiming accuracy. For example, if you’re strafing left with the A key, and you want to take a shot, you’d quickly tap the D key to imperceptibly counter-strafe (strafe in the opposite direction). This would help you immediately come to a stop and make your shot more accurate.

### How Does Snap Tap Work?

Snap Tap speeds up your gameplay by registering only the last key pressed, ensuring instant movements and quicker reactions. It’s a script in the keyboard’s software, and it’s only available on the Razer Huntsman V3 Pro line. As a feature, it can be turned off, so Counter-Strike players can still use this keyboard, just not with Snap Tap enabled. 

## The Problem with Snap Tap

Players began drawing attention to the fact that in a way, Snap Tap makes the game “pay to win”. It gives a clear advantage to people who can spend a lot of money on a keyboard. At the time of writing (2024), the Razer Huntsman V3 Pro keyboard with Snap Tap costs around $250. 

With some teams like SAW seeing surprisingly better results after introducing Snap Tap to their setups, this advantage seemed to be all but confirmed. That’s why in August 2024, Valve decided to ban Snap Tap, kicking any player suspected of using it from its matches. At the same time, Valve banned the use of certain binds, to ensure that a Snap Tap effect cannot be achieved through configs.

## Snap Tap Was Popular with the Pros

[According to the Reddit user u/person238](https://www.reddit.com/r/GlobalOffensive/comments/1ew5xh6/snap_tap_usage_at_cologne/), at the IEM Cologne 2024 tournament, around 50% of players were using Snap Tap. 

Out of the teams that placed in the top six in this tournament, four featured players who used Snap Tap. This included 3 players from NaVi, which placed second (jL, iM, w0nderful), 5 players from SAW and G2 each, and two players from FaZe, including karrigan. 

Since the Snap Tap ban, no one will be able to use this feature, including both casual player and the pros. Will it impact their game? That’s unlikely—they’ll just lose out on those tiny advantages that may have decided some close games. But both casual and pro-Counter-Strike functioned just fine before Snap Tap appeared, so it’s bound to carry on with Snap Tap banned!
